Leadership Development Programme

This is a programme organised in co-operation with the Merton Special School Alliance to develop leadership capacity for new teams. The programme is led by Professor John Yates.

Headteacher Forum

Primary and secondary school Headteachers also meet on a termly basis. Their meetings are focused on sharing best practice and fostering opportunities to listen to inspirational speakers.

Primary Expert Teachers

This programme has been developed to recognise and share the very best practice in Merton’s primary schools. Having developed a core group of teachers with outstanding practice within specialist themes, other schools can access their talents in order to support individuals in class and develop their overall school improvement strategies.

Primary Deputies Shadowing Programme

This is a programme funded through the Merton Partnership to provide primary deputies the opportunity to shadow each other for two days in the Summer Term.

New to Leadership

This is a one day session, supporting teachers who have recently been appointed a leadership role.

Growing into Leadership Programme

This programme has been developed alongside surrounding south London local authorities. Its aim is to support established middle leaders who are aspiring to develop their career into senior leadership and headship. The programme has been developed over the last 8 years with our SWLSEP (South West London School Effectiveness Partnership) colleagues and it now includes support and follow up from local Wandsworth, Croydon and Merton teaching schools.

Outstanding Programme

This includes a series of six courses developed by the Merton School Improvement, to inspire and support Merton’s most consistently outstanding teachers. These courses are available for both primary and secondary school teachers and are supported through a range of nationally recognised speakers, including Jim Smith.

The Merton Middle Leaders Course

This course is delivered to help inspire and support those new in positions of middle leadership.

Specialist Support for Middle Leaders

The London Borough of Merton supports middle leaders through regular network meetings and by offering targeted leadership courses. Such courses include ‘Leading on English as an additional language in primary school’ and core subject leader meetings.

The Improving Teacher Programme

This programme, consisting of half-day workshops, delivers practical support for teachers who have just started their teaching career and want to further develop their skills.

Middle Leadership Development Programme

Based on materials developed by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, this programme assists middle leaders in developing their skills and is led by two of our local headteachers.

NQT Training

NQTs have access to a comprehensive programme of training courses ranging from delivering outstanding mathematics lessons to safeguarding and working in Foundation Stage to working with EAL Learners.

NQT+1 Development course

In their second year of teaching, NQTs are supported by a programme consisting of 6 half-day sessions, developed by the Merton School Improvement team. These sessions involve helping teachers to reflect on their learning, to develop their work with additional adults and to raise expectations in English and mathematics.

Children’s Workforce Induction Training

New teachers starting in Merton, have the opportunity to develop an understanding of Merton's integrated, multi-agency approach to working with children, young people and families.

The London Borough of Merton actively promotes and creates opportunities for the professional development of its teaching staff. Teachers working in the Borough benefit from a continuing Professional Development Programme, enabling them to maintain and enhance their knowledge and skills.

There are many courses on offer, which can be accessed by employees at all levels, from teaching assistants to leadership teams and governors, to support their growth and progression as teaching practitioners.

These courses are listed on the Continued Professional Development website:

This website advertises not only courses offered by Merton Local Authority and courses being delivered in Merton’s local teaching schools, but it also directs teachers to local opportunities, such as the chance to attend nationally accredited courses, including the NPQML and NPQSL.
